The 2014 Blog North Awards will be held on Wednesday 8 October 2014 at 7:30pm at The Deaf Institute (135 Grosvenor Street, Manchester M1 7HE)
This year the annual celebration of the best independent online writing from across The North moves back to its spiritual home, the cosy Deaf Institute. Join us there for an evening of readings from some of the year’s most distinctive new voices, culminating in the announcement of the 2014 Blog North Award winners.
This year we’ll see the premiere of a specially-commissioned new writing from Claire Dean (above), whose dark and arresting tales we’ve long been fans of. Claire will be reading Pomona Fair, a new story set on Manchester’s mysterious Pomona Island. Her stories have been published in single-edition chapbooks by Nightjar Press and included in anthologies including The Best British Short Stories and The Year’s Best Horror, and her first collection is forthcoming from Unsettling Wonder. Robert Shearman said of her writing, ”Claire Dean has the gift of making the ordinary very sinister, and the extraordinary uncomfortably real’.
We’ll also be treated to a performance from most of Flashtag (David Hartley, Sarah-Clare Conlon, Fat Roland, Tom Mason). What’s briefer than a blog and faster than a tweet? Manchester short fictionists Flashtag present a rapid-fire blur of microfiction, story shards and petite plot points. Blink and you’ll miss dozens of short short stories from the masters of the craft.
As usual, we’ll get to hear from a select few of the shortlisted bloggers reading their work, which often provides some of the biggest surprises of the night.
Reading this year:
Kevin Boniface, The Most Difficult Thing Ever (shortlisted for best Writing)
Mollie Simpson, If Destroyed Still True (shortlisted for Best Personal Blog)
Lauren Vevers, thebellinijar (shortlisted for Best Writing)
Helen Mort, Poetry on the Brain (shortlisted for Best Writing)
And a short film from David Bailey, Food Legend (shortlisted for Best Writing)
As always, the evening will close with the crowning of 2014’s shining blogstars, happening at approximately 9:45pm.
Tickets are £6 (£4 concs). They will be available on the door or may be booked in advance. You can book tickets at Quaytickets or by calling Quay Tickets on 0843 208 0500.
