This is the shortlist for the 2013 Blog North Awards. For each category we’ve chosen a shortlist of five blogs and one ‘commended’ blog, which didn’t make the shortlist but which we thought good enough to merit special mention.

BEST YOUNG BLOGGER

This category is open to any blog written by someone under 23 (as of 16 October 2013).

The winner: The Ginger Bread Lad – “Quirky, creative and beautifully presented, with clear and characterful writing.”

The runner-up: Mean Miss Mustard

The shortlist:

Commended: In the Blink of an Eye: Poems by Adam Bojelian

BEST WRITING ON A BLOG

This category recognises excellent writing, plain and simple. Blogs publishing original creative or critical writing will certainly be considered, but a blogger posting about anything could be in the running. As long as the writing is consistently of a high standard, we don’t mind what it’s about.

The winner: Life without papers – “Crisp, controlled writing with a sense of immediacy and urgency that brings these important stories to a wider audience.”

The runner-up: Food Legend

The shortlist

Commended: Unicycle Emptiness

BEST PERSONAL BLOG

If you’re writing a blog based on your personal experiences this is the place for you. Whether you’re posting about the joys of parenting, living with illness, looking for work or simply reflecting on your day-to-day life, this category has the tagline ‘based on a true story.’ Your story.

The winner: Wife After Death – “One of the best blogs this year. An insightful report into the human condition.”

The runner-up: Round The North We Go

The shortlist:

Commended: Reasons To Be Single

Highbrow or lowbrow, enter here if you’re an artist blogging about your practice, a culturehound blogging about what you’ve seen, heard or read, or a cultural critic doing serious reviews.

The winner: Fontilan – “Inventive, surprising and beautiful.”

The runner-up: Ten Penny Dreams

The shortlist:

Commended: I ONLY DID IT FOR THE TIMEX CALCULATOR WATCH
